OUR PLAYGROUND
The tidal waters of the Kennebec, Back, Sasanoa, and Sheepscott rivers offer tremendous opportunities to both bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. This region is a diverse ecological transition zone between the sandy shores of southern Maine and the rocky coast to the northeast. The winding river channels that run to the sea expand this diversity by mixing both fresh and saltwater ecosystems with the movement of the tides. Merrymeeting Bay itself is the most reliable area in Maine to see nesting bald eagles south of Mount Desert. Being Maine's largest tidal fresh water estuary, Merrymeeting Bay is also a great place to find waterfowl. The picturesque coastal islands of this area are teaming with nesting osprey. A couple miles out to sea there are barren rocky shoals that provide shelter to both harbor and gray seal colonies.
OUR CRAFT
Our craft of choice is a 16' Amesbury Dory. Although its construction is of modern, “unsinkable”, foam-core and hand-laid fiberglass, its lines are based on the traditional New England fishing dories of old. This design has withstood the test of time, as well as everything that the Atlantic Ocean could throw at it.
My boat and mode of passage are specifically tailored to provide the most in depth exposure to birds and ecology. This regions characteristic rocky channels and thin water coves offer much broader opportunities to boats that can travel shallow water. With only a few inches of draft we can access much of this area that larger vessels cannot. Upon arrival near our destination we silence the outboard, and enjoy a slower paced more placid setting in which to observe the surroundings without disturbance.
